Governor Noem Spreads Myths About Marijuana

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, a staunchly anti-marijuana politician who recently vetoed hemp legislation, is wasting no time in spreading myths about marijuana in an effort to defeat the initiatives to legalize medical marijuana and regulate sales to adults. Yesterday, she was on the air claiming that marijuana is a “gateway drug” that makes people “end up committing crimes.”

No scientific research has substantiated the assertion that using marijuana makes an individual more likely to use other drugs, and the idea has been debunked by multiple peer-reviewed studies. Likewise, the claim that marijuana makes people commit crimes has no basis. In fact, recent research shows that ending marijuana prohibition improves public safety outcomes, as police solve more violent and property crimes and illicit drug traffickers are put out of business.

You can help South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws fight back against Governor Noem’s “reefer madness” propaganda by making a contribution to support the campaign.
