Veterans Benefit From Marijuana Reform

Veterans who use medical marijuana to treat PTSD, chronic pain, and other health conditions are criminals under South Dakota law.

A veteran who possesses just a gram of marijuana faces a maximum fine of $2,000 and up to a year in county jail. We need to change that.

For chronic pain, it’s common sense that we should make medical marijuana available to veterans as an alternative to dangerously addictive and potentially lethal opioids.

And passing both Amendment A and Measure 26 will benefit all medical marijuana patients by creating a regulated system that produces consistent products.

If South Dakota voters only approve Measure 26 — but not Amendment A — veterans will continue to face barriers to accessing medical marijuana. VA doctors are not allowed to recommend medical marijuana to veterans.

Voting yes on both Amendment A and Measure 26 ensures safe, regulated, and legal access to medical marijuana for veterans in South Dakota.

Working together, Amendment A and Measure 26 will legalize, regulate, and tax marijuana for adults 21 and over, establish a comprehensive medical marijuana law for patients with serious health conditions, ensure hemp legalization, and protect these policies from political interference and unnecessary delays.
