September 20 – Absentee Voting Begins
Don’t let being out of state on Election Day prevent your voice from being heard! There are two types of absentee voting:
In-person voting – You can vote early in person at your county auditor’s office during their regular business hours. If you are in South Dakota after September 20th, but will not be in South Dakota on election day, early in-person voting is a great option to take advantage of!
Mail-in voting – In order to request a mail-in ballot, you will need to send an application to your county auditor. Your county auditor will then send you a ballot to fill out and mail back.
We recommend you do not wait until the last minute to request your absentee ballot from your county auditor. If possible, we recommend you request your ballot by the beginning of October to allow time for processing.
October 21 – Voter Registration Deadline
You must meet all of the following qualifications to register to vote in South Dakota:
Must be at least 18 on or before Election Day
Must be a South Dakota resident
To qualify as a South Dakota resident, you must maintain residency in SD for at least 30 days before registering to vote.
Must be a US citizen
Not currently incarcerated or serving parole or probation for a felony conviction.
Not judged mentally incompetent by a court of law
Reasons you may need to re-register to vote:
If you’ve moved
If you’ve changed your name
If you are a former felon who qualifies to have your voting rights restored
November 5 – Election Day
Above all else, remember to vote YES on Measure 29 on Election Day! We always recommend you check your voter registration status before Election Day, which you can do in the Secretary of State's Voter Information Portal below. You can also find your polling place and eventually view your sample ballot once it has been published by the Secretary of State’s office.
